Today I had the privilege of speaking with Governor Malloy about the Miss Connecticut Organization at the state capitol with Sharalynn, Mr. Kuziak, and Tom.

This evening I actually followed the Governor back to Bristol to hear him speak about his tax legislation and budget plan.

To end the evening I was asked to sing “Amazing Grace” at the Police Officer of the Year ceremony in Bristol. I felt so honored to be there!

Today was the Miss Connecticut open forum in New London… It was very exciting because it was really the first time that all of the contestants were all together for the first time!

Today was Girl Scouts Mall Madness day in Enfield, CT! I emceed the fashion show, signed some autographs, and met so many wonderful girl scouts from different troops throughout Connecticut.

Tonight was the Miss Mattatuck pageant. Congratulations to our new titleholders: JoJo, Brittany, Melissa, and Alyscia! Everyone did a fantastic job.

Today I went to an auction to benefit John Trumbull Elementary School. It was nice to meet those who came to support the event and to also help out with the auction. I even decided it would be appropriate to auction off a “lunch with Miss Connecticut.” My donation went for over $200!

MyTV 9 Star audition!

Today I auditioned for the MYTV9 Star position! It was held at the Mcdermott Lexus dealership in New Haven. The position is to serve as a representative for WCTX MyTV 9, doing many sales/promotional events and broadcasting for different businesses. As the face of MyTV 9, the "Star" travels to many events throughout the state, shoots/edits/produces to create packages/ commercials, and serves as the talent behind the camera. The job is absolutely everything that I love! Nearly 200 people auditioned/ interviewed for the position.. WISH ME LUCK :)

This evening I spoke at the Bristol Exchange Club meeting. I know many members of the group very well, so it was great to share my experiences with them from Miss America and what I have been up to. I also had the opportunity to show the music video I created while in Haiti. They really enjoyed it! So much in fact that one member, Don Soucy, is providing funds for me to return to Haiti!! The generosity of people I meet absolutely amaze me... I am more than appreciative and so excited to go back!

This evening I went to the city council meeting in Bristol. Our wonderful mayor, Art Ward, gave me both a city and state proclamation recognizing my accomplishments. I spoke of how I am proud to be from Bristol and how my involvement within the city has helped me to become who I am today. The support I have from so many in Bristol is unbelievable. I stayed for the duration of the meeting, which was very interesting!

Miss Connecticut was honored last Tuesday at the town council meeting for her poise and her represen- tation of Connecticut and Bristol while competing in the Miss America Pageant this year.

Bristol native Brittany Decker received two procla- mations last week, one from the state and the other from the city of Bristol, com- mending her and honoring her for her accomplish- ments during her reign as Miss Connecticut, and com- peting in the Miss America pageant this past January.

“Unfortunately the judges didn’t see it our way,” Mayor Art Ward said about the result of the competi- tion. “If we were the judges you would have won the title of Miss America.”

Ward said he usually doesn’t watch the pageant, however, this year he did not miss a minute of the competition.

“I am always so proud to say I am from Bristol,” 21- year-old Decker said. “Bristol has made me who I am today,” she said, adding that without the organiza- tions she has participated in throughout the years have made her who she is today.

Decker stayed for the two-hour council meeting,

because she said she want- ed to. She also added that she hopes to be a future city leader one day.

Decker attends Western New England College and has traveled to Cambodia and Haiti, and worked on a documentary for school about her time there, and creating awareness about Third World countries.

“You have made the state proud, the city proud, your family proud, and most importantly yourself proud,” Ward said.

Today I emceed the John E. Pagels Elementary School Talent Show in West Haven with Logan. I opened the show by speaking and singing a song. During the show, there was one little girl who forgot her words while singing on stage and she ran off crying. Of course I went back to be sure she was okay. She really opened up to me after I shared a story of how I ran off stage one time after forgetting my answer to a question on stage at a pageant. I encouraged her to have the confidence to go back on that stage to face her fears and to perform again. After a few minutes of pulling herself back together, she wiped her tears, and did just that! When she came back on Logan and I went on stage to sing with her because we could tell she was still very nervous. She did such a beautiful job and we were so proud of her!

All of the performers were wonderful. Thank you Mikayla, CT’s Rising Star Petite, for inviting us!

Today I was invited to attend a ‘Bristol Risings’ meeting. Bristol Rising is a group that is working toward gaining support of the revitalization project in downtown Bristol. I absolutely love my town and am a huge advocate for the development of our downtown community. Today was National IHOP Day! Gail, Scott, and I traveled the state to six participating IHOPS: Bloomfield, Hamden, Newington, Orange, Wallingford, and Waterbury. Customers received a free short stacks of pancakes in an effort to collect donations for the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals! I flipped pancakes, served pancakes, and ate pancakes all day long! We had quite the adventure!!!

Miss America Homecoming in Nebraska!

A couple of weeks ago I received a very special e-mail from Amy and Jay Engle, the executive directors for the Miss Nebraska Scholarship pageant. It was an invitation extended on Teresa’s behalf to invite me to her homecoming celebration in Nebraska for the long weekend! I was very lucky to have Teresa, Miss America 2011, as a roommate in Las Vegas. We quickly became friends and established a close relationship with each other. I felt honored to be invited to Nebraska, not only because I was going to see Miss America- but to see my friend again and to see how she is doing.

Thursday, February 24

My flight this morning left Bradley Airport around 8am. I had a quick layover in Michigan and I arrived in Omaha around 1:30p.m. Bob Kropp and Caroline Bright, Miss Vermont, greeted me as I got off the plane. We waited for quite a while at the airport because of delayed/ cancelled/ missed flights. The time went by quickly though because I was in such great company! Ericka Dunlap, Miss America 2004, came to join us. Then Emoly West: Miss Oklahoma arrived, and finally Jalee Fuselier: Miss Hawaii and Miss Washington: Jacquie Brown! I can’t even explain the feeling of excitement to see everyone again! We went on a corporate jet to North Platte, Nebraska. I have to say, that was one of the most exciting experiences I have ever had! We all were in awe of the plane and we made jokes the entire flight of how we felt like celebrities. It’s not everyday that you get to ride on a private jet!

We landed in North Platte, met with Alyse Eady, Miss Arkansas, and headed to a VIP reception at the Spike. At the small gathering we were able to see Teresa and she ran right up to give me a huge hug! We mingled for a while with everyone, took some pictures, and then ate as we caught up with one other. Teresa is doing very well- of course she is very busy, but she is really enjoying herself. She is still the same Teresa that we all know and love!

After the reception, we were picked up in a stretch hummer limo! Ericka had the great idea that we go through the drive thru at a fast food restaurant. We went to this place called Runza and we decided to all go inside and make a scene instead of going through the drive thru! It was a very funny sight to see all of us. I did not try a Runza, and I’m still not exactly sure what it is, but my milkshake was delicious!

We were dropped off at our hotel and all of us girls, including Teresa and Ericka, got into comfortable clothes and hung out for a while before going to bed. Our “girl talk” was great… I really don’t think I have laughed so much in a very long time. It is just so nice to see how “real” everyone is. I am so lucky to have such amazing friends!

Friday February 25

This morning was very special and almost impossible to describe in words to those who weren’t in attendance. It was the Miss America Prayer breakfast that took place in a large ballroom at our hotel. One thing I love about Teresa is her openness to express her faith. She, herself, explained that she didn’t know she was ready to win- however, it was God that had it in her plans. They read aloud one of her favorite scriptures, Timothy 4:12-16, which says a lot about Teresa’s Message.

12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. 14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.

15 Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. 16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Teresa’s speech was moving. After she finished, Jay- her state executive director, introduced me before coming up to sing. He explained that people are brought into each other’s lives for a reason and he shared a little bit about the special friendship Teresa and I developed while at Miss America. When I came up to the microphone I, too, felt the need to say a few words on behalf of all of the girls. I just mentioned how we are blessed to have Teresa in our lives and that we are so proud of her and will be with her every step of the way. Then I sang Amazing Grace. It was a very slow, acoustic version of the song that struck emotions of many in the audience. I feel honored that I was given the opportunity to sing at such an amazing event. To top off the morning, philanthropist George Garlick donated 50,000 to create the Teresa Scanlan Scholarship fund to benefit the Miss Nebraska scholarship. He is truly amazing!

This afternoon we had lunch at the Canteen Grill at the hotel in our own small room. It is always great to eat in good company! Afterwards, we had a sound check in the ballroom for tonight’s performance. At around 2pm we went to the Platte River Mall for an autograph signing. We signed about 900 autographs for many children and other Miss America fans. At night was the Evening of Dreams gala where we ate a delicious meal, listened to Teresa speak, and we state titleholders performed. We mingled with the guests and took many pictures before heading up to bed! A wonderful and eventful day!

This morning we flew on our private jet to Omaha, Nebraska! As soon as we hit the ground our driver, Walter, picked us up and brought us to the children’s hospital. We went around to many rooms visiting the children! We talked to each patient, gave autographs, took pictures, and even sang happy birthday to a couple kids! Before leaving we went to visit a floor of the hospital with children suffering from eating disorders. A few girls and their mothers waited for us to come. I enjoyed this visit especially because I was able to have a conversation with them. A few moms told how this illness really was unexpected to them because they didn’t think their child, as young as 10 and 12 years old, could suffer from an eating disorder. They were very happy to talk with us and they were thankful for Teresa promoting her platform of eating disorders to get the word out.

While at the hospital I met a gentleman from a local TV station named Chase who is a friend with former Miss CT contestant and my good friend, Corrina Pysa! We made a video to send to her to say hello! It’s really a small world.

After the hospital, we all went to have lunch with all of the former Miss Nebraska’s. It was really great to meet everyone and to chat during our meal!

After lunch, Marsha took us to the zoo! We had so much fun visiting the desert, the rain forest, and the aquarium! Who knew you could enjoy so many exotic places during the wintertime in Nebraska!

After the zoo we went back to the hotel. I found out recently that I had family in Nebraska, so during our down time before the evening events my relatives stopped by the hotel for a short visit! It was so wonderful to see them!!

For our last big event, we had another dinner gala in the hotel. We had a wonderful meal and we were all able to perform our talents again, listen to Teresa speak, and mingle with everybody there. At the end of Teresa’s speech she told an inside joke that only myself, the other contestants, and Ericka Dunlap understood because of our conversation the previous night in the hotel. We all burst out in laughter as the audience sat there watching us. This just goes to show that Miss America is a ‘real’ person, and to us who are able to know her well, a great friend.

Tonight we all gathered in our hotel rooms to spend time with each other before we departed in the early morning. Jay and Amy Engle and Marc Angeli from Miss America joined us. I will truly miss everyone so much. It was an incredible weekend.

Teresa did not join us because she was busy meeting and greeting others downstairs at the hotel. However, I stopped by her room before she went to sleep. It was really neat to see the huge suite she was staying in! I gave her a frame of a collage of pictures of us from Vegas. I also gave her a pin called the “Circle of Friendship” and a note to go with it. The pin had one angel holding hands with a circle of other people. I explained that she is the angel and holding her hands are the rest of her Miss America sisters that will be here for her throughout her journey. I wanted her to know that she has a friend to talk to at any time; even Miss America needs that!

This morning we said our final good-byes as we went to the airport and left our separate ways. I am so thankful that I had this opportunity!

I know I say every day is great in the life of Miss Connecticut, but going to the Children’s Hospital is always extra special... So today was an extra special day! Scott picked me up to go to CT Children’s Hospital for my monthly visit. I went around to a few floors visiting many of the patients. I was especially lucky to see my friend, Jillian, there today. It is unfortunate that she had to be at the hospital, but we had the opportunity to catch up and visit for a while! She is amazing. Every time I leave my visits from the hospital I am overwhelmed with emotion thinking of the struggles these children endure each day; they are so strong. I always leave with a positive attitude because I know I was able to make the children there smile for the moments I have spent with them. Little do they know, they have impacted me forever.

After the hospital, Gail and I went to Maneeley’s in South Windsor to check out the facility for the “Day of Confidence” that I am organizing. It is beautiful and perfect for the event!

Today was a very special day. I was invited to the Hartford Armory to the Welcome Home and Freedom Salute Ceremony in honor of the 102nd Infantry Regiment coming home from Afghanistan. My friend, Gerry, showed me around the armory and introduced me to many incredible service men and women. The ceremony was truly moving. One soldiers boots remained in the line up in memory of Army Sgt. Edwin Rivera; a fallen solider in May 2010.

After the ceremony I went to New Haven for an event called St. Baldrick’s Day organized by the New Haven County Firefighters Emerald Society. Many came to the Wicked Wolf Tavern to shave their heads in an effort to raise money for children with cancer. There were many activities going on there throughout the day for children, families, and people of all ages! The people I met were so wonderful that they almost convinced me to shave my head! That was until JD convinced me that may not be the best idea.. It was an exciting event for an incredible cause!

Today I went to the Miss Western Massachusetts/ Miss Greater Holyoke Pageant in Massachusetts. It was great to have the opportunity to experience a local pageant in a different state and to meet many new friends! It was nice to see Loren, Miss Massachusetts. We had time to chat a bit on life after Miss America; it was nice to catch up! Some of our CT board members judged the pageant, so of course it was nice to see them as well. John snow made the most delicious white chocolate brownie!

Congrats to Sydney Levin-Epsin, Katlyn Lewicke, and Emma Gilbert on being crowned this afternoon!

After the pageant Gail and I went to Panera bread for several hours to discuss my plans for the next five months of my reign. I have some big ideas that we are working on :)

This evening was the Miss New Haven County/ Miss Fairfield County Pageant! At the beginning of the show I went on stage and received a standing ovation from the audience -my Miss CT family. I don't think anybody has any idea how much that meant to me. I have the most amazing support system; it is nice to be home with everyone. I spoke on stage briefly with Sonia Baghdady about my Miss America experience- I wish I had time to share everything! I truly enjoyed watching the show and cheering for all of my friends on stage. Everyone was incredible! Congratulations to the winners: Andee, Emily, Acacia, and Alex! I am so proud of you :)

MISS AMERICA

January 6- 16th

Wow, I truly do not even know where to begin. I have been home from Las Vegas for about a week now. I have had time to relax a little bit, collect my thoughts, and to reflect about the incredible and life changing experience that I just had. The emotions, feelings, and relationships that I have made seem to be impossible to describe in words. However, I will give it my best shot…

My first memory was seeing Melaina, Miss Colorado, and Adrienne, Miss North Carolina, at the Denver airport. It was comforting to see them and to share in the same feelings of excitement and anticipation while talking and laughing on our flight to Vegas. From the moment we arrived at the airport we were instantly wrapped up in a whirlwind of excitement; and so our adventure began. The entire week was very eventful. We met Boys II Men, enjoyed the Barry Manilow show (and met him afterwards!), viewed Las Vegas from the Eiffel tower, walked the runway at the Fashion Mall wearing our Joseph Ribkoff apparel, flipped pancakes at the Children’s Miracle Network IHOP breakfast, filmed commercials at DSW, Planet Hollywood, and Caesars, ate a delicious meal at Buca di Beppos.Rehearsals began in the early morning each day. We began rehearsing in the ballroom of the hotel- practicing our walking patterns and learning the opening number routine with Barry, Stacy, and Brian (they were so much fun!). By Monday we were in the theater and on the Miss America stage.

There were so many volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make the week go as smoothly as possible. A huge thank you to our security team- Rodney, Lewis, and my buddy Chris and our incredible hostesses (especially mine- Jean and Rosie!). They not only made sure that we were safe and on time to where we needed to be, but they really took the time to get to know each of us, relieve us from any stress, and put a smile on our faces. Thank you to the women working in the tent who made sure all of our wardrobe was steamed and ready to be worn on stage. The Artistry representatives were also very generous and a real pleasure to be with. I cannot thank everyone from the entire Miss America Organization enough. The endless work that they do to prepare for the pageant all year round is unbelievable and more than anyone (even myself) could ever imagine. The smiles on their faces and their positive words of encouragement made the experience so enjoyable. A special thank you to Mr. Art McMaster and Mr. Sam Haskell –two of the most sincere, inspirational, passionate, and generous individuals I have ever met in my entire life. They make such an impact on so many young women across this entire country.

I felt honored to be in the presence of 47 former Miss Americas in Las Vegas. These extraordinary women have been my role models for my entire life and it was surreal to not only see them right before my own eyes, but to also spend time with many of them. Just over a year ago I met Katie Stam, the first Miss America I had ever had the opportunity to meet in person. I remember every detail of that day- the way my eyes lit up when I saw her and the excitement I felt when she signed an autograph for me. In Las Vegas I realized how Katie and each former Miss America are real people. They are individuals who share many of the same characteristics and values as I do.

I am privileged to say that my very own roommate, 17- year old Teresa Scanlan, is our new Miss America 2011! We were able to get to know each other well, take many roommate photos, share laughs, and m&ms (haha). She is not only a very well spoken, intelligent, energetic, and beautiful young woman- but she is genuine and sincere. I am proud to call her my friend. Congratulations Teresa.

I look back and appreciate every moment I spent with my Miss America sisters. There were some nerves not knowing what it would be like with 53 women together in a pressured and competitive environment. However, everyone was truly AMAZING! I think about receiving inspirational quotes from Katie, Miss Michigan, having heart- to –heart conversations with Lindsay, Miss Maryland, and dancing the Macarena on the roof to keep warm with Jaclyn Miss Florida and Melaina, Miss Colorodo, etc. It is rare to meet true friends that share common interests, show love and support for one another, and who are genuine and sincere. I can say that I have met best friends in Las Vegas. I still talk to many of my new friends everyday and we are planning our next reunion!

There are a few particular moments that really stick out in my mind during the week.

One thing I will always remember is sharing my Miss America experience with Brooke. Literally a couple of weeks before leaving for Las Vegas I wanted to make this dream a reality- and I knew it would be possible. Within 24 hours of writing e-mails, making phone calls, and going around to a few different businesses in town, I had generous donations coming to me for Brooke and her mother to join me in Las Vegas. I have been a part of Brooke and her family’s life since she was about three years old. I know that I am a role model for her and her two sisters. But I have to say that Brooke is an inspiration to me and that I look up to her. She is one strong little girl who struggles through obstacles of her illness each and everyday. Brooke and her family deserve the world.

Before Brooke arrived in Las Vegas, I watched a news story on CT Fox that was filmed after I had already left. In the interview with Brooke, she said that she loved me and that I was her “Shining Star.” When I heard those words I felt on top of the world.

I felt my eyes tear up when I saw Brooke for the first time in Las Vegas at the DSW “Show Me Your Shoes” parade. I introduced her on stage in front of the large audience as my amazing escort. We walked the parade route together- waving to fans and taking many pictures along the way. I made sure to introduce her to all of my new Miss America friends and some of the former Miss Americas. The smile on her face was priceless. She was treated like a real celebrity! She looked beautiful on the final night of competition in her new red dress that she got especially for the occasion. At visitation she told me she loved me and that I was her Miss America. That was one of my favorite Miss America moments.

The way I felt as a result of the support that I received is another part of my journey that I will never forget. I received countless messages on Facebook, in my e-mail, through voicemails, in person etc.. The words did not just consist of a simple, “Good luck” – each message was in depth and came from the heart. I literally had people come up to me in Las Vegas commenting on how they have never seen anything like the messages of support that I was receiving. I would not be at the point where I am today without the people I have in my life. Each message touched my heart and they honestly meant more to me than a crown ever could.

As I stood on the stage at a rehearsal the announcer read during our introductions … ”13,000 woman this year have competed on the local and state level to be here tonight and these 53 women have risen to the top of their class…” For some reason that really hit me. I was standing amongst 53 of the most dynamic, intelligent, beautiful, and passionate young women in our entire country- and not only was I standing with them… I was one of them! So many young girls, of course including myself, watch the Miss America pageant each year and picture themselves being on that stage. It almost seems so far out of reach -I never really thought that I could actually be one of those young women. Well here I was, at that moment, standing on that stage. My dreams turned into a reality. I feel so blessed to have had this opportunity. Anyone who works hard, sets goals, and is unafraid to follow their heart in order to reach a goal- has the potential to turn their dreams into reality.

I can truthfully say that I have worked not only the past few months, but my entire life to become Miss America. However, it really is not about winning the crown and the title. I know that because I still feel like Miss America- just as I did before competing on the stage. It is about living a life of style, scholarship, service, and success every single day. Winning the Miss America crown is not a pre-requisite to being successful in life and is by no means a final destination. I know that the life-skills I have gained through the Miss America system –at the local, state, and national level will help me throughout my entire life. Every time I hear story of how I have impacted the life of another person, receive a compliment, or make someone smile – I experience my “Miss America moments.” That is what I live for every single day.

I feel that there are more than a million people I have to thank. To everyone who has helped me on this journey- you have absolutely no idea how much you have impacted my life. There are no words to even describe my appreciation for your love and support.

I felt 100% prepared for the competition in Las Vegas… I could not have asked for anything more. I felt like a million dollars –and that is the best feeling in the world. Thank you especially to those who made that possible-

Just thought I would give a quick update on some recent accomplishments!!

The semester at school has come to an end. Even with my busy Miss Connecticut schedule and Miss America preparation I received a 4.0 GPA!

^{Also, I have recently received a shipment of hundreds of pairs of CROC shoes worth in value over $5,000. I will be sending this shipment to the Christian Haitian Orphanage in Haiti. Angela Vonella, from the CROCS store at Westfarms mall contacted me after seeing my video that I produced to make the donation. I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart for their generosity. The children will be so excited to receive a pair of shoes!}

^{I wrote about Canterbury Elementary School in a previous post about a month ago. The children have been working extremely hard throughout the entire month of November and they have raised over $1,000 for the orphanage in Haiti!! This goes to show how people (even very young children!) can come together to make a HUGE difference. They truly understand the concept of being a part of “One World.” THANK YOU!}

Another Brittany Mission: I know I have previously posted a few times about my very special friend-9-year old girl, Brooke Lowe. Just to recap, Brooke has been diagnosed with OTC deficiency (Ornithine Transcarbamylase). OTC is a life-threatening illness where her body builds up ammonia, a very strong toxin, which stays in her system.

had the idea to grant her wish of flying her to Las Vegas with her mother for the Miss America Pageant. Her mother was in tears when I mentioned the idea! I have chosen her as my sign-holder to be part of the "Show Me Your Shoes" parade on Friday with all of the other Miss America contestants.

Many thought I was crazy when I brought up the idea because Miss America is coming so soon, I still need to raise my own funds to pay for the cost of my wardrobe etc., and everyone wants me to focus on my own preparation- all I must say, are very valid points. However, I just feel so lucky to have this once in a lifetime opportunity and I want to be able to share it with someone special. I just cannot let money get in the way of a memory of a lifetime for the both of us to share and the opportunity to change a little girl’s life. That is what Miss America is all about- impacting the lives of others.

Within 24 hours I sent out about 100 e-mails and went to several local businesses to ask for help with this mission. Well, the plane tickets are booked and Brooke and her mother are on their way to the Miss America pageant. Nothing is impossible :).

I would also like to mention that my new friend Zac Thomas is including me as a part of his project/ presentation for school.. I feel so honored! Thank you Zachary!

Children's Hospital Teddy Bear Give Away

This morning I went to Connecticut Children’s Hospital for the William B. Meyer Teddy Bear Give-away. I walked around the hospital with my arms filled with teddy bears to give to the patients. Each smile lit up as I got on one knee to talk to each child… they were all so excited! At the end of the day, I was even lucky enough to see my friend Jillian Duffy, 13 years old, and recently diagnosed with cancer. I saved a special teddy bear for her.

And this is truly what the Holiday season is all about. It is about giving back to others- especially children, bringing hope and encouragement to those in the midst of difficult times, putting life in perspective to realize how lucky we all are to be living, and simply just putting a smile on the face of others. That is the greatest gift of all.

Today I had a fundraiser at Sonic in Wallingford. It is the first Sonic in Connecticut and the owner, Brad, said it is the busiest one in the country! During the summertime, customers would wait over two hours for a server to skate to their car to deliver their meal!

My purpose today was to sell Community First Cards to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network. I carried my “Miss Connecticut Smile Tray” full of napkins and condiments and approached each car to introduce myself. I even roller-skated a bit! The only thing I would change about the day was the weather…it was SO COLD!! However, it didn’t hold me back from staying outside for the entire 8- hour shift. Gail, Brenden, Scott, and others came to visit to help out and keep me company.

Monday December 6^th

Today I had the privilege of singing at the State Capitol building in Hartford. I sang the National Anthem for the Laying of the Wreath Ceremony, honoring the fallen soldiers. It was an emotionally moving ceremony and I even had the opportunity to meet some “Gold Star” families that have lost a loved one during war. It is so important to think about our military men and women, both past and present, every single day. Freedom isn't actually free, it comes at a high price- sometimes at the cost of the ultimate sacrifice. I was honored to be part of the ceremony with state representatives, members of the Fallen Soldiers organization, military men, and families.

Tonight was the annual St. Anthony’s Holiday Showcase of Stars show at St. Paul High School in Bristol. It is a huge community show filled with talent. I led the children’s chorus in singing “Born on This Day” to open the show and I began the second half of the show with the children joining me in singing “Step Into Christmas.” I told the children that we were having a little contest… whoever smiled the biggest and sang the loudest I would come dance with while I was singing. Needless to say, they ALL had huge smiles and projected their voices full force to the audience. It was great!!

This morning I went to Milford, CT to see our amazing, official Miss Connecticut photographer, Catherine Fiehn. We went to a nearby historical society home to shoot a holiday photo. The site of the rustic home with a simple wreath on the door presented a perfect Connecticut scene. Thank you Catherine for the fun shoot and for going out of your way to make holiday cards!

On the way home, my mom and I stopped at Barnes and Noble in the Westfarms Mall to see my friend Catherine Gibson at her book signing. Cathy wrote the children’s book, “Through Sophie’s Eyes” – teaching how to spell in sign language and inspiring children to be kind to one another and to believe in themselves. I stayed for a while, helping to promote her wonderful book. It is definitely a great Christmas gift for a young child!

Happy Thanksgiving!! This morning I went to the annual Thanksgiving Day Game in Bristol! I walked around the field during their parade prior to the game and flipped the coin to determine which of the two town rivals, Bristol Eastern or Bristol Central High School, began with the game ball. The High School I graduated from won the game and “took home the bell.” Congratulations!

I was able to spend this evening with my family, which was a perfect way to spend my Thanksgiving.

If I were to begin my “Thankful” list, I am pretty sure that it would fill the capacity of the blog site. However, I have to say that I am so thankful for my life, filled with the endless opportunities to accomplish my goals and live my dream. I am thankful for the tangible entities I have in my life- seeing how others live in underdeveloped countries. Especially, I have a greater appreciation of having the basic living necessities; and most importantly I am thankful for the people in my life- my friends, family, and supporters who have believed in me and followed along thus far on my life journey. I am one lucky girl.

This evening I went to a rehearsal for a holiday show I am in, St Anthony’s Showcase of the Stars. I was able to meet the children’s chorus (many of them I have known). We practiced the songs they will be joining me in singing on December 4^th at St. Paul High School in Bristol!

After the show practice I did a little bit of shopping to pick out some special gifts for my two girls at the orphanage Haiti that are very special to me, Darlene and Malanata. I wrapped pink iPods (with music that I put on for them), jump ropes, shoes, and small treats, photo albums, and letters in the gift bags. Every time I am in a store I think of them and I see so many things I wish to send them because I know how excited and appreciative they would be. I also created a gift bag of health care items for my friend Denys, a woman from Alaska who moved to Haiti to help the people and spread the love of God to all. Her and I still keep in touch often. I have friends that are going to Haiti this week to celebrate Thanksgiving. They will be able to deliver the gifts for me. If I cannot be with them on the trip, I am satisfied knowing that children know I am thinking about them.

This morning I was at the Rocky Hill High School to visit all of the girls competing in tonight’s pageant and to wish them luck!

This evening I had the honor of attending an event in Bristol to benefit my 9 year old, beautiful friend, Brooke Lowe. I have mentioned Brooke in previous posts already, one in particular was when I went to visit her at her home. I share her story whenever I have the opportunity and sell her bracelets to help with the cost of medical expenses. Brooke is a young girl that I met about five years ago when she came up to sing with me at a Christmas event in town. I have developed a close relationship with her and her family since that day. She has been diagnosed with OTC deficiency, a life threatening illness. This evening, I was a part of a big fundraising event for her. She was so excited that I was coming! She has been practicing songs for over a month now because I told her I wanted her to sing with me. I entertained over 600 people that came to support her cause (what an incredible turnout!!) Then, I called Brooke on the stage to sing with me. I could tell she was nervous, as she stood close by my side. I wrapped my arm around her as we sang “The Climb.” I was filled with such strong emotions through the few minutes of the song that I couldn’t help but tear up, as did many others who were watching. I thought about the time five years ago when her & I sang together, she was only four years old. I also thought about the lyrics of the song- an uphill battle and struggles that are sometimes faced when making the climb to reach the top- being so appropriate to Brooke’s everyday struggles to survive, and how Brooke had told her mom a couple of weeks ago that the only thing that would make her feel better is seeing me. I live for moments like that- Moments that make me so happy that I want to cry. I truly feel that I have made an impact in Brooke’s life, as she has made a difference in my life.

Tonight was the Miss Hartford County/ Miss Rocky Hill Pageant. Miss Hartford County was my local title before winning the state title. Nakiya, Tracy, Elaine, Linda, and Marie all worked very hard to put on an amazing show.

I had been anticipating today’s visit for quite some time now because it was the day of my logo design contest. I organized an art project in the play room of the hospital for children to have an opportunity to create a design for my platform “One World: Hope for All Children.” My goal is to have the logo that I choose printed on T-Shirts and sold at upcoming events. This will raise awareness of my mission and half of the proceeds will benefit Connecticut Children’s Hospital and the other half will help sick children in Cambodia at the Sok Sabay Medical Clinic, where I serve on the board of directors. It was meaningful to see how my message was portrayed through the eyes of children. There were so many wonderful pieces of art; I cannot wait to announce the winner!

After my organized project, I went to the floor of the hospital where cancer patients were cared. I participated in a treasure hunt that the staff organized for one young boy. I joined the group of six small children as they wheeled around their IV poles that were nearly twice their size, on our mission around their floor of the medical center. The smiles brightened the hallway as the pirates answered each clue provided by a hospital staff member to arrive closer to the treasure. Finally, they children found the “X” that marked the spot and there was a mustache making party! We had a great time creating our own mustaches and beards, laughing with each other, and taking pictures.

It is impossible to imagine what these children and their families are going through. The pain, suffering, and obstacles that are faced each day by these young and innocent children just does not seem fair. But I am there to bring my message of hope and happiness to these children. And the truth is, they are happy- just like any other healthy child. Their courage is an inspiration to me. I pray for my friend Jillian Duffy, 13 years old, who has just been diagnosed with leukemia and has started chemotherapy.

The memories I have from today are definitely unforgettable.

After leaving Hartford, I drove to Watertown to pick up a dress from Natalie at Ragtime Boutique that Mary Jane had altered for me. Thank you for providing me with beautiful dresses for my appearances! You are truly the best.

Tonight I went to dinner with my great friend, and constant supporter Diana Laroe! It was nice to catch up and a perfect way to end a wonderful day.

This morning I was privileged to have an interview preparation session with the well known and extremely intelligent, Don Baker. I really enjoyed listening to everything he had to say; he is an extremely engaging speaker. He offered some very helpful tips to keep in mind while preparing for Miss America.

After leaving Glastonbury, I stopped by to wish the beautiful Haylee Brooke a Happy First Birthday. Haylee is my local business manager (and great friend)- Tracy Patton's, daughter and she is adorable! At the celebration I was also able to see many of my pageant friends that I haven’t seen in a very long time!

This evening I went to St. Anthony’s Church in Bristol for a rehearsal for their Annual Showcase of the Stars Christmas show. I was able to sing a few songs with the children’s chorus. They were all so excited to have me there, just as I was to be there. I am looking forward to the show on December 4^th!

This afternoon I went to see Natalie and Mary Jane at Ragtime in Watertown to go pick up two dresses that Natalie is giving to me! They are both absolutely beautiful and I cannot wait to wear them! Natalie has always been there for me and many other girls that I know. Please, go in to see what new dresses she has in her store- she has something for any age and occasion that may be coming up!

This evening I drove to North Haven to go to Libero Jeweler’s for a Miss Connecticut Organization Fundraiser. 15% of all sales went to benefit our scholarship fund. It was so nice to see everyone from the board of directors, Mrs. Amerone, Linda Lubrico, my mom, and Diana LaRoe there to support the event. Monday November 8^th

Today I had the privilege of speaking at the Cheshire Exchange Club meeting. I truly do appreciate anyone who is willing to listen to me speak about the Miss America Organization, my platform, and my accomplishments- and these men and women were genuinely interested in what I had to say. My platform, "One World: Hope for All Children" relates to the Exchange Club national platform of Child Abuse Prevention, which made our conversation even that much more interesting. As soon as I arrived, everyone made me feel so welcome and I really enjoyed their company throughout dinner. I shared with them the true meaning of the Miss America Organization and how it affects young women and how it has molded me to become who I am today. I then spoke of my platform- telling many stories and showing my video presentations that I have produced in Cambodia and Haiti. They were engaged in my message and they asked many questions. I received many thoughtful compliments afterward.

I feel so blessed to meet such wonderful people each day. I find it important to keep the relationships with those I meet as well. So hopefully I will be seeing the members of the Cheshire Exchange Club in the near future!

My Business Manager, Gail, received an e-mail from Carl, a member of the Cheshire Exchange Club, the morning after meeting them. This, to me, was the ultimate compliment:

A Birthday Surprise!

This morning I went to a Suffield for a little girl’s 11^th birthday party- “Brunch with Brittany.” Her name is Donatella and I have known her father because he is on the Board of Trustees at Western New England College. All of the girls at the party had their own sashes with their names on them and they wore crowns. We all had so much fun! I took a picture with each one of the girls to put in frames that we decorated. I made the girls balloon animals and they played the game “Pin the crown on Brittany” with a big portrait that Donatella created of me! We ate a delicious brunch as we had girl talk (haha, they were so cute!). Mr. Mancinone showed me his collection of motorcycles, which was very cool... and they had an indoor pool! Before I left I sang a few songs for the girls and they danced along. I had so much fun celebrating Donatella's birthday! The Mancinone’s said they are going to have a big Miss America viewing party at their home to watch me in January! How exciting :)

This afternoon I emceed the CT Talent Jamboree to raise money for the Miss Connecticut Scholarship. There were so many amazing acts! Talia Vendetto won the competition with her incredible dancing abilities- she was a well-rounded, entertaining performer. I thank all of those who performed and who came out to support the show.

Saturday November 6^{th: Day 1 of a very eventful weekend!}

Early this morning was the Veteran’s Day Parade. FX and Loretta were there waiting when I arrived. The parade began in Pawcatuck, CT and crossed the border into Westerly, RI. I truly enjoyed listening to those who spoke at the ceremony following the parade. I even had the opportunity to speak. I thanked all of our Veterans and our active duty service men for all that they do for us. They should all be celebrated not only on Veteran’s Day, but everyday. Seeing the chaos, disorder, and lack of freedom in the third world countries I have visited, helps me appreciate even more the freedom that our United States military has fought for us to have, and put their lives on the line to keep for our country everyday. I told of my very close friend, Matt Lavoie, who was in a roadside bomb a couple of years ago in Iraq. He has undergone over 50 surgeries and has lived at Walter Reid Hospital in DC. for the past two years. It is the service men and women in our country who are our hero’s.

After the ceremony, my mom and I drove to Antenna Salon in Norwich so they could make me look beautiful for the gala that was later that evening. JD and his amazing staff always make me feel like a million dollars!! They go way above and beyond. I felt so special as JD curled my hair, Janet painted my nails, Hector did my make-up, and a woman from the Norwich Bulletin interviewed me- all at the same time! Also, Prime Restaurant across the street brought over a platter of delicious sandwiches for lunch!! I always love to go to Antenna!

This evening was very special. It was the Children’s Medical Center’s 2010 Storybook Gala to raise money for the hospital. I was very honored to be invited to this event and to have Scott Organek come with me. We arrived around 5:30 for the cocktail hour prior to the event to mingle with everyone. I met the emcee, Mike Hydeck- former WFSB Channel 3 anchor who now anchors in Washington D.C. I also met the guest speaker, Mike Lupica, a famous sports author and a very nice guy! I sat at a table with a very nice family; it was great to meet them and they were a lot of fun to talk to. The dinner was incredible and I really enjoyed listening to Marty (the president/CEO of the hospital) and Mike Lupica speak. After dinner I helped Mike Hydeck and the auctioneer announcer with the auction. It was unbelievable how giving many of the people there were. There was one anonymous donor of $150,000! Many others donated amounts- as much as $20,000, $15,000 down to $500. There were over 500 people in attendance and they usually raise over $500,000 at the event for the hospital. How amazing is that?! At the end of the evening the band played music and I was dancing with many new friends. I felt honored to be at such a wonderful event… especially because it was for the Children’s hospital!

This afternoon I went to Ragtime Boutique in Watertown for a fitting of the dresses I picked out a few weeks ago. It was great to visit with Natalie and Mary Jane. They do so much for me and for the Miss Connecticut Scholarship Organization. Thank you!

This evening I went to the Imagination Museum in Bristol for “Wild About Animals” day. The children in the museum were able to see many animals- they even brought in horses! As a part of the celebration the museum held the annual Kiss-A-Pig campaign. It is an annual fundraiser where the town selects about 4 representatives to raise money for the Bristol Boys and Girls Club. The person who raises the most money gets to kiss Daisy the famous Pig! I was selected as a representative a few years ago and I raised over a thousand dollars and was able to kiss Daisy!

Happy Halloween!!!

Today I spent a few hours at a local nursing home, Ingram Manor. I dressed up Dorothy and walked around to visit the residents, wish them a Happy Halloween, and hand out small Halloween gifts to them. My great-grandmother lives at this nursing home, so she came along for our walk. The residents were very happy because many do not have family members or friends who visit them frequently.

Tonight I stayed home to hand out candy to the trick-or-treaters.. It was exciting to see all of the costumes!

I spent the entire day today in Bristol at Spare Time Bowling Alley for the Special Olympics bowling tournament! I arrived at 8am and met my cousins Albert and Jenna who came to volunteer as well. I was in charge of the opening ceremony- getting everyone excited for the day! I also sang the national anthem. While the athletes bowled, I walked around to each lane cheering everyone on! It was obvious that everyone was having so much fun! The smiles on their faces and their loud cheers for one another while I handed out the awards, made my entire day. At noon we repeated the entire opening ceremony and tournament over again with new athletes from different towns.

Tonight was the Miss Naugatuck Valley Pageant! They put on a great show! Congratulations to the New Miss Naugatuck Valley 2011- Krystie Lynn Seese and Miss Naugatuck Valley's Outstanding Teen Michaela Cavallaro! Everyone did a wonderful job!

Connecticut Children's Hospital: Reverse Trick-or-Treat!

Today was a very memorable day. I went to Connecticut Children’s Hospital to celebrate Halloween with children who are unable to go out for Halloween. I was considered an honorary employee for they day as I dressed up with the staff to take part in the reverse Trick or Treat! I was in a group with the foundation members and our theme was Mother Goose and her Nursery Rhymes; I was Little Miss Muffet. We walked around to visit the sick children in their rooms and deliver a bag of treats and a smile to brighten their holiday. They were all very excited to see us. Many parents very thankful as well because they said their children were very upset they could not be a part of normal Halloween festivities. It was just as rewarding for us to see the smile on the faces of the children we met.

After walking around the floors of the hospital, we went to a brief reception downstairs. Marty, the President/CEO of the hospital (who I have a met a few times previously, the most genuine person!), and I judged a pumpkin contest that the employees took part in.

Afterwards, Scott took me to see many babies who were born prematurely. I saw one baby who couldn’t have been any bigger than my hand; she was 1 lb. 5 oz. It was a very sad sight to see. Thankfully the baby is in extremely good hands at Connecticut Children’s. It is the best place for a child who needs care to be!

Finally I was able to get a flu shot to end the day! This was the best way I could have ever celebrated Halloween.

I want to say thank you to Scott Organek for really developing the relationship between the Miss Connecticut Organization and the Children’s hospital. He has been a hospital employee since 1996 and he recently was elected to the Miss Connecticut Board of Directors. We are so lucky to have such a close relationship with the hospital to foster Miss America’s National Platform, the Children’s Miracle Network. Scott is truly passionate about helping kids. He has become a very dear friend of mine. You’re the best Scott!

Canterbury Elementary School Haiti Fundraiser Kick-off/ Judging Mr. Mills!

Today was a very exciting day. I drove to Patty May’s school where she is a music teacher, Canterbury Elementary school. The students at the school are having a fundraiser in my honor to support the orphanage and the children I am close to in Haiti. I went to their monthly assembly to kick-off the fundraiser! First off, I would like to commend the school on doing such a wonderful job with bringing together their school community. During their assembly they recognized the students with birthdays this month, they awarded two artists of the month, one young girl sang a song to the audience, and they highlighted three students as hostesses. Recognizing accomplishments of students is the perfect way to instill self-confidence.

Everyone at the school made me feel so welcome, especially the students! They were excited to see me, just as I was very excited to see them. When I spoke, the children were extremely engaged. I told the kindergarten through forth grade students of the children I know in Haiti that are their age. I shared a few stores and let them know how much of an impact they are making on myself and to the children at the orphanage. I explained that the children there are happy- they smile and laugh just like them; kids are kids everywhere. However, it is important to help give them some of the necessities they need to survive to make their lives a little bit easier. The students and the parents who attended were very enthusiastic about helping, which made me very excited! After I spoke, the chorus sang the song “We Are The World.” It brought tears to my eyes because that is the song my little friends in Haiti sing to me. It reinforced my feeling of how close we all really are; how distance shouldn’t serve as a barrier for bringing people together. I ended the assembly thanking them once again, singing the song “Over the Rainbow” and ended on an energetic note singing “Somedays You Gotta Dance.” All the children got up to dance, laugh, and celebrate.

This evening I had the privilege of judging the Mr. Mills “Pageant” at Lewis Mills High School in Burlington. I judged with some of the school’s faculty members. The phases of competition included: Personality wear, Marriage proposal, talent, onstage question, and work apparel. The contestants were all so talented in their own unique way. It was extremely entertaining to watch!! I was able to crown the winner :)

"Reporting from Haiti and Cambodia: A Personal Perspective of Hope and Healing"

Today was a very special day. My wonderful Professor, Brenda Garton, along with other Western New England College staff organized a big event for me at the college to speak about my platform and experiences abroad and to celebrate for Miss America in January. Many showed up to support the event including almost the entire Miss Connecticut Board of directors, friends and colleagues from school and home, Joner- my friend from Haiti, my family, many professors, deans, administrators, and the President of the college- Dr. Caprio.

At the beginning of the evening I was interviewed by the local news station, channel 40. As people entered, a video of my crowing and talent was playing to give a little insight of the Miss Connecticut pageant. Professor Garton, Dean Saeed Ghahramani, and Dr. Caprio all gave me an extremely kind introduction. Then I had the opportunity to speak. I began with thanking everyone from the bottom of my heart for the constant love and support I receive. The people that were in that room were those that are closest to me in my life right now. Each person contributing in different aspects of my life to help me become who I am today.

Next, I briefly spoke of the Miss America Organization and how it has impacted my life. I think it is very important to explain my pageant life to those who don’t truly understand what it is all about. I explained the four points of the crown; Style: not about the clothes I wear, but about wearing a smile on my face, showing self-confidence, and carrying myself in a positive manner because that is a true reflection on who I am everyday; Scholarship: I explained how Miss America contestants are extremely intelligent, how I take academics very seriously, and how the scholarships I have received through pageants have helped me to pay for my education; Service: I explained about how I got involved with the system at a young age because my parents instilled the importance of giving to the community. Each and everyday I dedicate a part of myself to service for others; and Success: being a well rounded, committed, self-disciplined, ambitious person and living the lifestyle of a Miss America everyday, with or without the crown. After I explained the four points, I think the audience had a better understanding of the Miss America Organization and my purpose for being a part of it.

I then spoke of Western New England College and how much of an impact it has made on my life. The opportunities I have received from the college are endless and the support of the staff goes well beyond their required duties. I truly feel that I am a walking billboard for the college everywhere I go… whenever anyone asks where I go to school, I not only respond but I go on and on about how incredible the college is. Professor Garton and her family and Dr. Caprio, the college President, are even going to Las Vegas to support me at Miss America!!!

The bulk of my presentation was on my platform, "One World:Hope for All Children." I shared my experience with children I have inspired around the United States. Then, I shared my documentary that I created in Cambodia that won an Associated Press award earlier this year. Dr. Mary-Anne Herron, the woman I accompanied to Cambodia, was also there to share her kind words. Next I shared my music video that I created while in Haiti. I shared many personal stories and Joner even spoke of living his entire life in Haiti. I truly feel that the audience was inspired by my message. That means the world to me.

And finally there was a reception with food and cake to wish me luck at Miss America. I can't even explain in words how thankful I am of all the support, I can't say it enough...

This evening was the Miss Sounthington Pageant. This year was very unique- it was held at Testa’s banquet hall and the show was caberet style. I thought it was a very creative idea of the Miss Southington board to try something new! I had the wonderful opportunity to emcee the event with Sharalynn! It is always great to spend time with her. I was even able to sing during the show.

I was proud to crown the new Miss Southington 2011, and good friend, Morgan Amorone! Nicole Morin won the title of Miss Southington's Outstanding Teen 2011, Maggie Milton is the new Miss Plantsville's Outstanding Teen 2011, and the beautiful Jordyn Gauvin is Miss Milldale's Outstanding Teen 2011!

This morning I had an appointment with JD at Antenna Salon. He did a wonderful job with my hair and Carol gave me a manicure! I’m so lucky to have amazing sponsors!

Today I went to the Fall Food Stroll in New London! We walked down the main streets to taste delicious food samples at participating restaurants downtown. Many restaurants took part in the event. I was able to try a wide variety of food and meet many wonderful people in the community!

Today at school I met with my favorite Professor and great friend, Brenda Garton, along with another one of my other great Professors, Brian Zelasko, to go shopping at the Western New England College bookstore to get some new WNEC attire! I really cannot speak more highly of my college. Those who I have met there and the skills I have learned in such a short period of time have helped me to become who I am today. The opportunities I have received and continue to receive are innumerable and have made such a huge impact on my life. I truly appreciate the constant support, especially now on my journey as Miss Connecticut. Professor Garton and her family, along with the president of my school, Dr. Caprio are even coming to support me at Miss America in Las Vegas!! Isn't that amazing!?

Next Tuesday (October 26th) I will have a presentation at my school at 4:30 to speak about my platform and share my videos that I have created in Cambodia and Haiti. It will be also be a celebration for Miss America. Everyone is welcome- on and off campus! Come see my beautiful school!

Today Logan and I went to the NBC health and Wellness Fair at the Hartford Convention Center. From 12-2:00 we did a Meet & Greet signing autographs with the news anchors. Then we were able to walk around and see all of the exhibits.. I even got a massage! At 3:00 I was a contestant in the Minute to Win It competition! There were three different tasks to choose from... one person had to try to stack five apples in the minute, two others had to pull out two tissue boxes worth of tissues in the minute, and I got the best task of all (HAHA!)... I had to put vaseline on my nose and pick up as many cotton balls as I could, run across the room in my 5-inch heels and drop the cotton balls into a bowl. In order to get them off my nose I had to shake my head rapidly (and remind you, I had my crown on!). .. Honestly it must have been a very funny sight to watch! I'm always up for a fun competition!

Colonials Game/ Pumpkin Festival/ Jocks VS Cops!

Today was a very busy day, with three appearances one right after the other.
First I went to the Hartford Colonials Game! Again, I had such a great time! I celebrated before the game at "Fan-Fest" and I even got to hand off the game ball this time! Despite the cold, it was a great day for a football game!

My next stop was the Pumpkin Festival in Forestville. The children paraded down the street in costume and a line of dogs in costume followed along too! There were so many creative pumpkin designs made by a wide range of age groups and different companies in the area. It was a great time to socialize with people that I knew from town and also to meet many new friends! I love the fall season!

And finally my evening ended with the Jocks VS Cops game at Muzzy Field in Bristol. ESPN played against the Bristol Police Department in an intense game of flag football to raise money for the Bristol Boys and Girls Club- an organization I have been close to since a very young age. Before the game I played a little football of my own with Allen. There was a band for entertainment prior to the game and a wonderful band called Amely for the halftime show. The Bristol Eastern cheerleaders were there to cheer on the Jocks and the Bristol Central Cheerleaders supported the cops. I sang the anthem before the game. What an exciting event, and for such a great cause!!

This evening I had an awards dinner at school. It was called the Skookum Award for Excellence. In order to get this award a student had to first be nominated by a professor or faculty member. Then, there were two interviews following to narrow down the candidates. Fifteen senior receive this prestigious award, and I felt honored to be one of the participants! I was able to enjoy a nice dinner with my parents, grandmother, Professor Brenda Garton, and department chair Professor Battema at my table. It was truly a nice evening!

Today I met Marla at her house and we headed to Sound School, where Donna Prete teaches in New Haven. There, I was able to speak to three high school classes of Juniors and Seniors, about myself and my platform “One World: Hope for All Children.” I shared through a PowerPoint and my video creations this inspiring message I have shared with children in Connecticut and America and with children abroad in Cambodia and Haiti. I love sharing stories of what I am so passionate about.

After the school, Marla and I went to her home to prepare a bit for interview and to look over my paperwork.

This evening I was in the mood to make someone smile. At the football game this past Friday, I saw one of my favorite little girls, Brooke Lowe, that I had met about five years ago while having her sing with me at a Christmas event. I had stayed friends with her and her family since then; Brooke is now in the 4th grade. Brooke’s mom sent me a message the next day saying that after the football game Brooke had went to the children’s hospital that night. On her way home, she told her parents that the only thing that would make her feel better is seeing me again. Brooke has been diagnosed with OTC deficiency. (OTC) Ornithine Transcarbamalase, is a life threatening illness in which there is no cure. OTC is a urea cycle disorder in which the the body lacks an enzyme responsible for removing ammonia, a highly toxic substance from the bloodstream. Ammonia can cause damage and or death. Lately, Brooke has been very sick. So tonight I picked up three bouquets of flowers, for Brooke and her two sisters , Zoe and Lilly, and surprised them at their home. They were all beyond excited! I stayed there for a while the girls showed me how to tap dance, play the clarinet, and talk for a while. Brooke showed me on the computer that she was just looking at pictures of me on the computer. Not only did it make their night, but it truly made my whole week. The smallest gestures can mean so much.

Today I met Gail in New London to go to a few places. Our first stop was to meet Mallory Musante. Mallory contacted me because she is a new designer of a beautiful line of shoes. She hand-crafts these shoes. She gave me a pair to wear and share with people that I meet to help get her designs known to the public. They are very unique and beautiful! Our next stop was to visit our friends at Grossman’s Seafood! I had promised Thomas that I would come visit and sign a picture that we had taken during the Operation Lobster Dinner. It was so great to see Sean, Thomas, and the rest of the crew! Grossman’s Seafood even made a donation for me toward my charities and Miss America. Thank you for your constant support! I know that I will remain great friends with everyone at Grossmans!

Before heading home, Gail and I had the pleasure of going to dinner with Stan and Luis! As usual, we enjoyed each other’s company. It was a full day of visiting many great friends- both old and new.

Atlantic City: Miss CT bus trip!

Bright and early this morning I met in New Haven to catch the bus for a Miss Connecticut fundraiser to Atlantic City. It was great to visit the original home of the Miss America pageant again. We walked the boardwalk, enjoyed the casinos, and had lunch with many of my closest friends from the Miss Connecticut Organization!
